Latvia was settled by people known as Balts in 9000 BC.
In the middle ages Latvia was on a mainland route. This route was used by Vikings and German traders. The Germans started to settle in Latvia and with them they brought Christianity. The first chruch was founded in 1186 and in 1201 todays capital, Riga, was founded.
Untill 1500 century Latvia was ruled by Germans. But because of Latvia's location, its terrotories were wanted. In the years 1558-1583 there was a war between Russia and its western neighbour countries over Latvia. Sweden and Poland got parts of Latvia. Sweden reinforced its status by taking over Riga in 1621. Sweden lost its part of Latvia in 1721 and Poland lost its part in 1772 to Russia. Russia then ruled Latvia all the way to 1920.
In 1917 Latvia started to go for independence and on 11/18/1918 they declared independence. It's independence was recognized on 8/11/1920 when Russia stopped ruling Latvia. During world war two Russia ruled Latvia again in 1944-1945.
In 1990 Latvia redeclared independence and in 1991 it joined UN. In 2004 it joined EU and NATO.
